It is true that this look came together after my first viewing of Coco avant Chanel, and I was, thus, more than willing to adopt her minimalist, masculine lines.

However, the reason for which I'm starting today's post with a trademark quote by Miss Chanel is that I too believe in the power of taking lemons and making lemonade. And more than this, more than finding the good in the bad, I trust that for every thing that we do not like, we have a duty of finding one that we love.

So, now that I pulled myself together and started focusing my creative energy into something that I love, I cannot wait until I share it with you! It will all be unveiled in ... 1 ... 2 ... 3 ... days.

Monday's indulgence

If this isn't the very first time you read one of my posts, I'm sure you already know by now that if there's one day in the entire week that I hate, that day is Monday. And I'm sure I'm not alone in this, because for various, but multiple, reasons, Monday never goes exactly as we originally planned.

It's a long time that I've given up trying to make anything out of this most terrible of days. Even making plans was out of the equation. That is until recently when something so simple, yet incredibly perfect occurred to me: make Mondays your pampering days. Since doing any relaxing action shouldn't be so complex, it also shouldn't be that easily spoiled by the curse of Mondays.

So what can you do?

♥ Schedule a massage at home! If you're in Paris you can benefit from the magical hands of the Liu family. They come at your home and for only 40/hour while one massages your head and neck, the other rubs your feet. Can you spell heaven?

♥ Give a new type of body jewelry a try! How about a nose ring? Since there are so many nifty nose studs, why not go for a diamond and platinum one? Because a girl can never have to many diamonds!

Want some more?

♥ If you're lucky enough to have the whole day off, go all out and book the entire day at a whimsical beauty salon! My personal choice is the Russian hair&beauty salon, Oksana.

Try a new hairstyle.

Be the recipient of a head massage.

Get some shine in your hair with a blow dry.

Be amazed at the wonder of braids.

While enjoying a fancy cup of tea.

Enjoy your new relaxed self.

Read a mag, bien sûr.

Sometimes, things are also red.

And pastel pink, turquoise, yellow, and so many other lovely colors.

Next time when you have any type of dilemma, be it moral, ethical, or frivolous, put yourself in the other person's shoes (only theoretically, unless, of course, they're really really nice shoes). Eliminate those famous shades of grey, because they're actually only a weak replica of black and white. And begin looking at all the wonderful colors that give dimension and originality to any situation.

The French, remaining true to their nature as oratory (read altercation, dispute, and argument) lovers, have taken the art of debate to unexpected heights. Somehow, it does make sense that the institutionalization of sometimes absurd, but always incredibly original subject matters has been shaped in the city of Paris.

The Eloquence Competition is being organized by the Paris Court in order to discuss, no irony intended, quite vital matter for our modern lives.

Should we burn our love letters?

No, my English isn't in trouble. Although my weekend was, and still is, fabulously glamourous, it has been more than anything full of Glamour. Glamour magazine that is, who so kindly featured me in their DO section.

Idle days

The country is in turmoil. My special project still requires a lot of work for it to be completed on time. There are, as always, a lot of things that need to be done, yet I am still terribly sad about my own personal loss.

Thus, what is there to do when you just don't want to do anything?

Put on your favorite jewelry. Yes, this is for staying indoors, in you PJs :)

Get up to date on those mags you bought a while back and still didn't finish reading.

Watch a good movie/documentary.

Make yourself a hot cocoa. Add a dash of brandy if necessity calls.

Reorganize your home, more stuff around, sort out your magazines.

Lastly, and always, read a good book.

After all, 'books are the perfect entertainment: no commercials, no batteries, hours of enjoyment for each dollar spent. What I wonder is why everybody doesn't carry a book around for those inevitable dead spots in life.' - Stephen King

On sadness and tears

Bad things happen. Try as you might to avoid it, people get hurt, things get taken away, others are mean, friends die.

Yet, it is not the possibility that something might disrupt the harmony of our lives which scares me. It is the fear of not crying afterwards that I always find troubling.

I've read that crying releases endorphins into the body, helps both with blood pressure, and cardiovascular problems, and is the ultimate stress reliever.

Still, it is not the fear of not benefiting from these advantages that I am worried about. Worst yet, what if the sadness is just too big to translate into crying?

If you too share my fear, worry not, for when the time comes you'll cry your eyes and soul out, and still have some leftover tears for later.

The only comfort I now (after the first couple of crying series have ended) find is to know that I have truly and exhaustively enjoyed every moment of the time I was given to spend with my loved one.

You might read these words and judge them as repetitive of something you've heard before, and empty of meaning.

If they are repetitive, it is because they are true. And only if you do not take them into consideration and do not apply them, will they become empty.

Anything that you now consider to be simple, will save your broken soul when it's all over. A hug, a kiss, and a photo of someone you love are all you need.

Because showing your love will never go out of fashion.

Cappuccino, please!

A perfect cappuccino consists in a balanced blend of espresso and hot milk, with a rich steamed milk foam. A perfect new year requires a new project, some fresh snow, and a steaming cappuccino.

I am overly-excited to share all the details about the new project, as I cannot wait to hear your thoughts! Right now I'm putting some final details in place. Soon, very soon ;)

We didn't get any snow at all, but I did get a new haircut and hair color. Very different than the red shade you know so well, but much closer to my natural shade. And, as the McDonalds marketing team would put it, I'm loving it! What do you say?

Aaand I've been spoiling myself silly with a cappuccino and a croissant every morning since this year started, because if you're not going to spoil yourself, chances are no one will. After all, one has to set the example! So make the best out of this new year, make/order a cappuccino, grad a good book, and get inspired!

Winter is by definition the season of giving, and, consequently, buying. But, as we all know paintfully well, spending budgets tend to have an annoying characteristic called a limit, and there is only so much we can ask of dear Santa too.

So, when all else fails, window shopping remains a trustworthy and dear friend. And when the windows in question are among the likes of Printemps and LaFayette Paris the activity of window shopping ceases to be a back-up solution and becomes an indeal way of spending a relaxing afternoon.

The New York Dress

Do you know that your dress looks like a map of New York? he said to me.

I fiddle with my hair, until hesitantly deciding to tuck it away behind my ear with caution. I say nothing.

He looks at me, looks at the dress, and nervously starts clapping his hands.

I mean, I guess that's cool now, not that it wasn't before, he continues. I mean, it's strange, that's all. I mean, not abnormal. Just eccentric, and kinda funny. If you know what it mean. He smiles and looks at me.

I push my hands down the pockets of the dress, trying to reach for my safety cigarette. I always have it handy for these kinds of situations. I imagine taking it out, gently lifting it to my lips, putting my hand down my other pocket, taking out the light, lighting the cigarette, and slowly inhaling. But I never do. I don't see why this time would be any different.

He eventually stops trying to figure out the interworkings of my fabric and looks forward.

We walk like this for an hour, maybe two. I don't know, it could have been one day or five minutes.

I see joggers running past us, couples hugging and kissing on benches, dogs walking proudly on their respective leashes.

I look down at my black shoes and wonder how I am ever going to get this white dust out of them.

We continue to walk forward with no specific direction or plan. It feels like we haven't said anything for weeks.

The last days have been a constant going back and forth between this and that, here and there.

I finally lift my eyes to look at him. Do you want to go to New York? I tentatively ask.

No, he said. I'm very happy just being here with you.

Vodka and Caviar is the name of my latest purchase from OPI, which is oddly enough neither the silver/white of vodka, nor the blueish black of caviar, but an indulgent shade of dark red. Regardless, it was the image of black, white, and a little bit of silver that complement such a strong red that I couldn't forget. And more so, the image of luxury that one could associate with vodka&caviar.

So it is in this frame of mind that I recall an article that I wrote not so long ago for the latest issue of Absolutely Fabulous Magazine: Luxury goods an investment in the future.

A limited edition fragrance, time, a gold watch with diamonds, a hug from a loved one, an exotic bag, a smile, an American Express Centurion credit card, a bubble bath, a weekend at the Plaza Athenee Paris, or the designer dress of the moment. All of these may be, at some point, the definition of luxury. Some have defined luxury as "functional art applied to things" (Jean-Noel Kapferer), others consider it to be the "hand's impact" on quality (Stanley Marcus), while others see luxury as a "necessity that begins where necessity ends." (Coco Chanel)

Personally, I believe that luxury is the story behind the product, namely all those affective and emotional qualities that we attribute to the product, and that surpass its rational and practical qualities, such as functionality, quality, origin, manufacturing. However, regardless of which definition you prefer, the desirability of luxury items is indisputable because of the quality, rarity, exclusivity, and experience that they can provide. Moreover, regardless of current economic climate, luxury objects possess a quality that makes them even more undisputed desirability: the value of most of these products is not lost in time, and in many cases it increases considerably, making luxury items more than a whim, but more of a smart investment.

An investment in your image, that is certain, but how could a fad turn into a financial investment? Very simply, as I said above, through the value it holds. And when I mention "value" I do not mean money, but also to forecasted performance and longevity. The only case in which the purchase of a product would not provide a good investment is the one in which luxury would be considered, erroneously, synonymous only with a high price. A high price is not a certitude unless it is accompanied, and supported, by excellent quality, both aesthetic and manufacturing quality. Of course, even in the latter case, the purchase of a luxury product does not ensure a safe investment because the quality, rarity, and authenticity of the producer (origin, tradition, integrity) enter into the mix that creates the perfect luxury product as investment.

And if we set our sights on a luxury items from the Fashion and Accessories section, once all the above mentioned factors have been taken into account and the value has been estimated, the only question remaining is: contemporary or vintage?

With the risk of having this hold over my head for the entire duration of the near future, however long that might be, I must admit that last weekend marked an important date: my first visit to the Orsay Museum. The main reason for this already overdue decision was the temporary exhibition Beauté, morale et volupté dans l'Angleterre d'Oscar Wilde, a feast of paintings, decorations, illustrations, poetry all depictive of the particular beauty of Oscar Wilde's world.

And while the exhibition in itself deserves a visit, and extensively makes up for a long queue, it is the museum's entire collection that is ultimately inspiring. Boldini's Scène de fête au Moulin Rouge, with it's red and gold accents, Whistler's colors, or rather lack thereof, Caravaggio's chiaroscuro ... they are all a rich source of inspiration, for how could so much darkness and beauty, and beauty in darkness not continue to fascinate over and over again?

“I belong to another generation... “ - The Great Gatsby

. . A feeling that I share only too well with Fitzgerald’s Mr. Wolfsheim, at least too well for my own benefit most of the times. I dream, no, I yearn for a time when ladies wore hats and gloves, and fashion pioneering was still a real possibility.

I dream not of changing this world, but for exchanging it for a world were films were silent and music was loud. And, much as I try, I cannot seem to change myself for this world either. Thus I am stuck between fantasy and reality in a limbo where memory and imagination interweave in a web so thick that neither is distinguishable any more.

So I am left with the only possibility that we dreamers have: to inject the real world with as many ‘memories’ from another time as it will allow us.

Yet, since fashion and trends have become almost completely evocative of other periods in history we are sometimes rewarded with a glimpse into the era which lingers in our dreams.

The flapper is back as, from Stella McCartney, and Calvin Klein to Chanel, waistlines are dropping and garbs are getting glitzier. As for John Galliano and Marc J. for LV, I recon none what to see a girl who isn’t embracing her inner roaring 20s this Fall.

And, if this is not enough razzle-dazzle for you, then might I suggest the latest goodies from ghd? The Scarlet Collection is not only yet another amazingly effective hair styler, but it comes with an art deco clutch that Greta Garbo would surely wear and Gatsby's Daisy Buchanan would adore. Lately, I've been hearing a lot of talk about guilty pleasures. Be it in the form of gourmet food, macarons, chocolat, la tarte aux pommes, wine, etc, if there's one think the French like, and can always find a way of justifying, is their 'péché mignon'.

Truth be told, this new change in location has not been stress-free. So, without wanting to encourage our already over consumerist society, I for one am not above indulging in the guilty pleasure that is shopping., provided that comes with the promise of inner comfort. The vague assurance that everything will be ok couldn't hurt either.

And because I've been good, or naughty, depending of the perspective, Santa came early this year in the form of many new wardrobe goodies.

Ruffles and abstract florals at Ungaro S/2012

On one of the few breezy mornings that this year's PFW had, just feet from the Arc de triomphe de l'Étoile, in the historical Parisian theater hall, Salle Wagram, the house of Ungaro showed its newest collection for Spring 2012. Without Giles Deacon, but with abstract floral prints inspired by NASA aerial images. It all added up in the end to a very beautiful Spring/Summer collection, with a lovely color palette, some interesting details, and feminine shapes. Does it sound too generic for your tastes? While it didn't bring forth any ground-breaking revelations about life and/or fashion, it was a more than adequate collective effort from the still struggling house of Ungaro. With some very wearable pieces, and, again, wonderful colors even an anti-summer-fashion person, such as myself, wouldn't mind seeing a few of these in the closet.

After some very tiresome days, a demin shirt (D&G) with a little-black-skirt (Ekyog) was all I could muster up for the morning. But hey, at least I was wearing some fancy shoes :)

Nude and black, shredded trimmings, a multitude of cut-outs, and rhinestone insertions would generally describe Nicola Formichetti's collection for Mugler Spring 2012 at Fashion Week in Paris. Many things come to mind with regards to Scandinavian fashion and design, with the most obvious being Ikea, and, of course, H&M (Hennes & Mauritz). It is no surprise, as these are two retail giants that have completely, and irremediably, changed the face of our consumerist society. As we well know already, Scandinavian design is much more than a made-in-china, albeit minimalist and stylish, picture frame, but what we must not forget is that Scandinavian fashion weighs more than a made-in-cambodia polyester dress, as well.

Recently I was pleasantly reminded of this when, while looking for some cute, everyday dresses, I stumbled upon http://www.ellos.co.uk. With clean cuts, natural fibres, and affordable prices, they have Scandinavian inspired clothing that can easily rival more than a few self-entitled designers, and certainly, any chain retail store.

Yet, as welcomed as the surprise of discovering a fresh new online shop was, the act of uncovering Scandinavia's best kept fashion secrets is even more rewarding. With brands ranging from Björn Borg, Gina Tricot, Minimarket, Fifth Avenue Shoe Repair, Cheap Monday, Filippa K, Tiger of Sweden, J. Lindeberg, or even Vero Moda, Only, and Vila (all of these last three being Danish) to personal favourites of mine such as ACNE (Ambition to Create Novel Expressions), Diana Orving, Peter Jensen, Malene Birger, and Sandra Backlund, Scandinavia is becoming less than a secret, and more of the go-to place for the fashion world.

And it is evident why. The blend of simple, practical, and timeless with alternative elements that are edgy and contemporary results in an aesthetic which is so typically Nordic that is it clearly visible in the creations of new designers, well-established ones, chain retailers, or Scandinavian inspired online stores such as www.ellos.co.uk. It is the Scandinavians' natural and practical approach to life combined with their inclination for experimentation, not to mention attention to quality and details, that make it utterly extraordinary and unforgeable.

We'd better watch out because there's a new fashion power coming our way. And it's bringing a lot of edgy minimalism along with it!

Starting with the 5th of July of this year, and ending the 13th of November, the Arts Décoratifs is housing a retrospective on the work of a fashion designer that hardly needs an introduction: Hussein Chalayan.

It is with great difficulty that I categorise him under the label of 'fashion designer' as his reach covers an entire range of domains, including, but not limited to: special effects, visuals, videos, photography, sculpture, fabric design, furniture design, and more. Indeed, these were all used both in his fashion shows and in his designs, yet it is the way in which he used them in order to express social realities, or political convictions that makes his designs transcend into the realm of art.

Even so, his perfect patterns, exquisite technique, incredible knowledge of fabric, and materials do not allow us to forget that we are looking at a fashion creation still. Just when we think that we are begining to understand a social and/or political statement, Hussein Chalayan uses a cut or a shape that only comes to demonstrate his love for the fashion world and extraordinary fashion skills. His mixing of futuristic ideas with primal symbols, and technical inventiveness with traditional manufacturing results in a work that feel so strangely and surprisingly natural that it can only be the work of a genius.

"How different was my first sight of Paris from what I had expected . I had imagined a town as beautiful as it was large. I saw only dirty stinking alleys, ugly black houses, a stench of filth and poverty. My distaste still lingers." Jean-Jacques Rousseau.

As it happens, it is not only Rousseau's distaste for Paris that lingered, but also his views of the city, that remain almost as valid today as they were in the 1700s. Indeed, most of the houses look simply gorgeous now, yet the alleys are just as dirty, and the streets are filled with prostitutes, pick-pockets, and homeless men. Yet, at the same time every cliché that is said about Paris ceases to be such, and becomes bewitching reality. It truly is one of the most romantic cities in the world, the food is one of the best, and the sky seems to have been painted by Degas. And, I believe, it is in the tension between these two faces of the city that Paris' true heart lies.

It is, of course, the same for one of the city's most famous quartiers, Marais. La Place des Vosges, for example, one of Marais' most popular attractions, has been ever since it was built in the 1600s both "a pick-up spot for whores, and a fashionable promenade in the city." Nowadays it continues to be just as fashionable, as it is touristy.

Still, all things considered, it remains one of the city's most charming places. A site that is best explored on foot with no map and no plan, for it best unveils himself to the curious ones. Walk along the Place des Vosges to discover Victor Hugo's house tucked away between douzens of little art galleries. If any building catches your attention, and believe me it will, do check and see if you can go in. You will not only, most likely, be able to do so, but will also be pleasantly surprised by a beautiful courtyard. Marais is one of the greenest places in Paris, yet all the gardens, that are by the way public, are hidden behind building walls (Hôtel Carnavalet, Hôtel de Sully, and Hôtel de Soubise just to name a few).

See if you can find the designer outlet store, La Piscine, and if you do, bargain for a further discount, you'll probably get it, but expect no more than the additional 10-15%. Wander away from the fashion boutiques on Franc Bourgeois only to find the tiny Rue des Rosiers the heart of a historic Jewish quarter , but also the place to get the "best falafel in the world." You could find most of these in the guides and 'insider' tips, but, as with most places, they much more charming when uncovered accidentally by yourself.

So wander aimlessly and see what 'secret places' catch your heart. That's what I did, and remained enamoured.

After a long car journey (yes we took the car as I for one am virtually incapable of packing light, so just picture me having to deal with the task of paking for a 4 months stay . . and in Paris in all places . . enought said), and an equally long, and incredibly more tedious accommodation into the apartment (the cleaning . . the unpacking of the many aformationed suitcases . .) we are finally in Paris!

From the uncharacteristically many suspension points used I assume you already know by now that photos/blogging time has been scarce. Yet things are looking up, and I suspect a welcomed routine taking shape soon. Thus I can safely promise that I will shortly return with news, stories, photos, and more from the magical city that is Paris. Because yes, it is as magical as they say! ♥

Worry not, there are no alarming breaking news here, just a couple of lovely features that brightened up my day. The first one was an article in the fashion section of a national paper, Adevarul. Meticulous handwork usually calms any nerves, especially mine. So with having to get ready, pack, and organise for our 3 month Parisian stay what better to do than procrastinate with something completely useless. Yet cute :) Thus, fondant decorations for some 'vintage tea party' -inspired cupcakes is what I mostly did over the weekend.

Breakfast in Bed - Quick Portuguese Tarts

The beauty of lazy Sunday mornings when warm and yellow Sun rays peak in from behind the bedroom curtains can only be enhanced by having your breakfast in bed. And if you have someone to prepare and bright it to you, well . . that's only the caramel on the tart :)

And in matters of such great importance, like breakfast in bed, Jamie knows best. I've recently discovered his 30 Minute Meals series and decided to give one of the desserts a try as a breafast treat: Quick Portuguese Tarts. All you need is:

1 pack of 375g of puff pastry
125g crème fraîche
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla paste / vanilla extract
5 tablespoons golden caster sugar
1 orange

ground cinnamon

plain flour (for dusting)

Mind you, he says this is for six tarts, yet my puff pastry shell turned out too thick, and I also had some leftover cream, so, with the same quantities, I will do at least eight next time. Because yes, there will most certainly be a next time, as they are delicious!

Now that you have the ingredients, I will leave the actual intructions to the professionals:

Jump to the easy choice

As soon as I woke up this morning I fiddled about in the kitchen trying to decide what to eat. I was uncharacteristically hungry and naturally undecided on what should my breakfast be. After finally, albeit unoriginally, deciding on a piece of Graham toast I then had to decide on the plate, the knife, the napkin . . . The result? It took me about half an hour to arrive at a conclusion and 'prepare' the most plain piece of toast. And then about 2 minutes to actually eat it.

Anyone wondering why I've been talking about my boring breakfast for the last paragraph? Because it is my honest opinion that the many choices that surround us are paralysing our very existence. Our fundamental needs are nowadays far from being basic. Whether you're going out for dinner, or making dinner at home there is a vast choice of restaurants, menus, and even tastes to cater for. The both consumerist and global society we now live in has ensured that you can find shops and/or restaurants that range from American, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Italian, French, etc on the same block. And if you do decide on going out don't even get me started on getting dressed.

Should I go for a dress, a skirt and a top, a skirt and a blouse, pants and a blouse? Endless questions lead to an endless evening. And it really isn't our fault that our society is as consumerist as they come, yet in the end it's you that will most probably end up going to bed on an empty stomach or on the lonely bag of chips that was left in the kitchen cupboard. Sure not all of us are so incapable on making decisions, and consequently assuming responsibility as I am, yet you cannot deny that these days decisions don't come easy.

However, it is still our society that comes to the rescue, at least in the 'what should I wear department' with an all-in-one choice: jumpsuits! Whatever you call it: jumpsuit, playsuit, romper jumper; and whichever style you go for one shoulder, cut-out shoulder, denim, vintage-y, animal print, embellished, short, long, or cropped, this item remains an easy, comfortable and fashionable choice. Agreed, this is probably not one of the toughest of life's decisions, yet in such a hectic and fast world I'm not one to disregard an easy choice. And you shouldn't either :)

Let them eat cake

Aside from the very popular, however infamous quote that forms the title of this post, when I think about cake there is yet another quote which comes to mind: Eddie Izzard's Cake or Death? Easiest question in the world because honestly you could pair cake with anything else in the world, including macarons and cupcakes, and you still get the same heartfelt response: CAKE!

So when my parents 26 wedding anniversary came around there was no question in my mind regarding what I will surprise them with. I spent an entire day and a good chunk of the night to pull off 26 gumpaste roses which I used for decoration of this Walnut Cake with Vanilla and Crunchy Caramel Cream. I admit I was responsible solely for the decoration bit, as my mom took on the task of actually making the cake. A long and meticulous task so let me know if you need the recipe and I'll see what I can do :)

In the mean time, I hope you enjoy the visual stimuli and allow me to wish my parents a Happy Anniversary and Long Marriage! xx

Six easy-peasy hairstyles

I used to be obsessed with hairstyles, thus changing my hair as often as I would change outfits. Then highschool came along, and the obsession switched to hair color. After trying close to everything except for a multi-colored punk mohawk, as much as I wished I could not find anyone to help me in this endeavour, I had to settle for 'normal' shades. During college I rapidly went from shiny dark locks to light blonde, hence managing to almost completely ruin my hair. So for the next couple of years my hair went through a series of regeneration treatments, until I found what I think to be the perfect shade of red, a shade that you well know by now.

So if the colored is settled, how about some new hairstyles? There are more than a few tutorials out there, that vary from easy-peasy to utterly complicated, yet after a thorough searched I pinned down a handful of approachable hairstyles courtesy of my all time favourite hair straightener brand, ghd.

Today I though we'd try a series of six easy and fast hairstyles that evolve one from the other. Either decide on one of the styles and stop along the way, or go to the next step for yet another look.

Let us start with clean, freshly blow-dried hair, and:

a flexible, medium-hold hairspray

(I used Rockaholic Styling Fun Times Flexible Hairspray)

a dozen bobby pins
a couple hair ties
one fine-tooth comb

1. Back-combed 60s

Devide you hair in three horizontal section, tying each section with one of the elastic bands.

Take one strand of hair and back-comb it, then apply hairspray directly under it, close to the scalp. Remember to use the hairspray from a distance of around 25-30cm. Do this until you've gone through al of the hair sections.

Arange the hair stands backwards, and lightly comb them over to have a nice clean finish.

2. Side pull-back

Just twist a strand of hair from each side of your head . .

. . and pin them at the back.

3. Bangs bouffant

Worry not, because whether you have bangs or not, you can still pull this off. This time you have to back-comb the side part of your hair, the ones that we previously pulled-back. Take the front hair section and back-comb that one as well.

Now arrange it backwards and lock it in place with the help of a few bboby-pins.

4. Pin-up ponytail

Unpin you bangs and comb them sideways, just be careful not to disturb the original back-combed section. Then tie it with one of the elastic bands, and use your fingers to style the hair curls inwards.

Spray all over to hold everything in place.

5. Side braid

For an easy twist try braiding the ponytail into a 3-way braid.

Not only easy, but very helpful for our next step . .

6. The side chignon

Now that you have some nice curls going from the previous braid take a strand of hair and start rolling it around your fingers until you reach the base of your ponytail and then pin the curl. Do this for all remaining hair strands. For another take on it check out this cute and easy tutorial I found.

As easy as 1, 2, 3 . . or 6 :)

If there's one thing I've learned during the ups and, especially, the downs in my life is that regardless of who is or isn't still in your life, regardless of how much you would want, at times, for everything to stop, as long as you're breathing there's nothing else to do but go on. Sad and tragic events have marked our recent existence, and raised existential issues that can easily take anyone to the brink of profound darkness.

Yet, as much as I think that it's too soon to write anything that doesn't start with "in loving memory of," there is really no other choice but to accept pain and death as part of life, as life is to short to spend it in sorrow.

Comic books writer Alan Moore said that “life isn’t divided into genres. It’s a horrifying, romantic, tragic, comical, science-fiction cowboy detective novel. You know, with a bit of pornography if you’re lucky.” And that it is. So I'm tuning in to a more comforting channel in the form of a beloved childhood memory that most of us share: Mickey Mouse. Whatever floats your boat is what I always say. Now find something that gives you comfort/joy/pleasure/ a smile, and go do it.

Personally, I'm crazy about nautical stripes all year long, but during Summer this obsession takes on new dimensions. And it's a good thing because this is when stripes are hotter than ever, pun intended :) Be it the classic stripes of Sonia Rykiel, or Vivienne Westwood's quirky ones, there's plenty to choose from!

Oversized Bag

If there's one season when I feel like stuffing everything in my bag and schlepping it around with me that's Summer! So there is no better moment to switch to an oversized bag that can carry a couple pairs of sunglasses, sunscreen, notebook, pens, phone, ipad, etcetc. Be it a clutch, a satchel, or shopper, this is when bigger is surely better!

Neutral Sandals

Flats, wedges, platforms, take your pick, but make it in neutral in order to pair it with everything your heart desires. I love my nude pair of Jeffrey Campbell sandals, but I admit I already have a new shoe crush in the form of a pair of clogs from nude footwear at www.kandco.com/. Need I mention that nude shoewear has the ability of making your legs seem mile high? I think not ;)

A denim shirt

My devotion to denim is proven once more by me adding it to this list. Still, in my defence, I must say that its 100% cotton composition really makes it a great fabric to have on during those hot Summer days.

The Printed Mini-Skirt

Floral, geometric, a mini will look effortlessly chic in Summer, plus simply comfortable!

The Shirt Dresses

Whether it's monocrome, printed, or, shocker, denim, a shirt dress will easily become your go to wardrobe item. Have you seen Rihanna sporting one on the streets of NYC? A tad to short, yes, but still pretty cool.

The Maxi-Dress

Tune in to a 70s vibe, a kaftan, or just go for your favourite print one and wear it with casual flats for during the day, or a long necklace and jewelled sandals for those cool Summer evenings. The difficult task here will be choosing just one of the stylish/comfortable/flattering maxi dresses that are out there.

The Jumpsuit/Romper

Versatile and sleek, you can find this item in virtually any style to suit your mood and personality, and become a style staple.

The White Tank

Some might say that a tank in any color, shape, of form is essential for Summer, yet I would argue that nothing compares to the basic white tee. Pair it with a basic pair of jeans, and some sassy red flats, and you're set for a great casual chic Riviera outfit.

The City Shorts

Shorts are a no-brainer for Summer, still I think we should take that extra step and opt for a pair of tailored shorts. Do wear them with some cute heels and you're ready to go.

Sunday Breakfast: M&M Cookies with Cofee

M&M cookies, yes! Or bits of sunshine and happiness if you will :)

Since I first found a bunch of recipes for these on that is surely the ultimate food-porn website, TasteSpotting, I kept making them until I found one with which I'm now really happy. It's basically a version of the recipe found at sophistimom, and it goes like this . .

375gr all-purpose Flour
(I actually ended up using about 400gr, but start with 375 and go from there)
1/2 teaspoon Baking Powder
3/4 teaspoon Salt
220gr unsalted, room temperature Butter
380gr Sugar
2 Eggs
1 tablespoon pure Vanilla

1 tablespoon Cinnamon

(well, actually I used about 2 or 3, but I'm a cinnamon freak)
1 pack M&M candies
(small or medium depending on how many you want on there)

Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius.

In a bowl sift and mix all dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, and salt).

Set aside.

In another bowl, using an electric mixer, cream the butter until smooth and light.

Gradually add the sugar and continue beating until fluffy.

On low speed add the eggs, one by one, then the vanilla.

Gradually add you dry ingredients too.

Scoop out ball of dough and place them about 5 cm apart on the baking sheet.

Press as many M&M as you can onto your ball of dough, don't worry if they seem too many as they will spread out.

Using a clean glass, flatten each ball slightly with the bottom of tha glass.

Place it on the middle rack of your over and bake for about 12min, until just golden on the edges.

After removing the tray from the oven let that cookies rest for about 5min.

Then transfer to a cooling rack.

Just perfect for a sweet breakfast on a sunny Sunday morning.

Serve with coffee with/and/or milk.

Keep these happy cookies covered and they'll be good for at least a week. If there will be any left :)

PARIS !

Yes, starting September I will be blogging from the city of fashion, lights, carousels, macarons, romance, and, of course, love.

Right now I'm still entangled in administrative stuff, but I'm hoping everything will go smooth so I can start worrying about something even more important: packing for an entire autumn and a bit of winter!

Thus, for a little bit posts/feedback/comments might be a tad scarce, but worry not as soon I'll be sure to delight you with thoughts written from a charming parisian apartment, and photos from the streets of what is surely one of the most romantic and cultural city in the world. Oh, I just can't wait!

Denim. Again.

Although you wouldn't necessarily say so from this particular outfit I'm slowly growing tired of brights. Sure color blocking was fun, pattern clashing even funner, but enough is enough. I want black leather, grey felt, deep green, dusty teal, oh the beauty of Fall . .

Yet, there's one thing I'm still not over, and that is denim! Courtesy of the latest sales from my-wardrobe a distressed denim shirt made its way to me. Wish I could have paired it with a pair of leather leggings, however, Bucharest is hell on earth right now, at least weather-wise. So the only sensible thing to do was to compromise with a cute flower print skirt and some colorful accessories.

Indeed, I gave in to weather conditions and common sense, but it got me thinking, when do the small compromises we make start being the condition instead of the exception? When do we start letting other people, be it the weather man, or even our friends direct our action just because compromising is "easy."

Robert Fritz said: “If you limit your choices only to what seems possible or reasonable, you disconnect yourself from what you truly want, and all that is left is a compromise.” Sure this doesn't mean that reason is the devil here. But what it does mean is that no one cannot, and should not, stay between us and our desires. The thing you keep dreaming about, the one that you find yourself thinking about when your mind wonders, the one that you have on your moodboard, that is the one you have to go for. And don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Sunday Tea - Violet Cupcakes

One way of spending Sunday morning, other than in bed, is to infuse your kitchen with a new color. Today that color is violet! For their 90th anniversary show Gucci presented a F2011RTW collection with a color palette like no other: teal, purple, violet, amethyst, lavander, and plum, along with scarlet, amber, and lime. Givenchy adds violet shades for Fall through prints and embroideries. And Missoni and Pucci aren't far behind either, and use violet shades to accent their color palettes. So what are we to do but blueberry cupcakes with blueberry frosting and candied violet pansies!

Let's start with the candied violet pansies . . .

Candied flowers require:

1 Egg White

Pansies, or the edible flowers of your choice

a bit of Fine Sugar

Beat the egg white manually with a fork to a light foam.

Use a clean kitchen brush to apply this to your flowers.

Sprinkle flowers with sugar.

Let them dry on wax paper until, preferably, the next day.

Now that these are done, let us move on to some wonderful fresh blueberries . . .

I found a great recipe for blueberry muffins that I changed just a bit.

For 1 dozen muffins you will need:

115 grams unsalted Butter, at room temperature

260 grams All-purpose Flour

½ Teaspoon Baking Soda

2 tsp Baking Powder
1/2 teaspoon Salt

130 grams Sugar3 Eggs

125 ml Milk
2 Teaspoons Pure Vanilla Extract

2 Teaspoons Cinnamon

200 grams Fresh Blueberries (more or less depending on taste)

Preheat the oven to 190 degrees Celsius.

In a bowl sift and mix all dry ingredients (flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt).

Set aside.

In another bowl, using an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar together

at medium spead until light and fluffy.

Add the eggs, one by one, then the vanilla and milk.

Gradually add you dry ingredients too.

Gently fold in the blueberries.

Fill your tin and place in the over for about 25min.

Or until golden brown and delicious!

As for the blueberry frosting all you need is:

115 grams unsalted Butter, at room temperature

300 - 350 grams Powdered Sugar
1/2 Teaspoon Vanilla Extract

100grams Blueberries

Simmer blueberries on stove for about 3-5 min.

Mash gently with a wooden spatula, then chill in the refrigerator for about 30min.

Cream butter and powdered sugar together until smooth.

Add vanilla extract, then the chilled blueberry puree.

If piping consistency is not yet obtained just add more powdered sugar.

Now decorate as desired!

Denim Whiteout

I don't feel like I'm exaggerating when saying that there's nothing like the feeling of a crisp Sunday right after a good Summer rain. The air is fresh, natures seems revived, and everything looks clean and new. I for one didn't come up with anything new as my obsessive personality strikes again, for instance I'm still fascinated with denim. This time it's not flare jeans, or a denim dress, but a pair of worn-out boyfriend jeans. Very comfortable, of course, and casual enought to make a proper white jacket appropriate for a lazy Sunday out.

As it is, it was quite an eventful Sunday. So what did I learn today?

☆ Sunday mornings are best spent in bed.
☆ Don't be afraid to walk bearfoot in the grass.
☆ If you're not going to ignore strangers completely, then be nice and smile at them.
☆ The things you have, or even the thoughts you have are not what define you, but what you do.
☆ Kittens really are the cutest thing.
☆ Exercise and stay active.
☆ And, as cheesy as it might sound: go after your dreams.
