A breath of vintage air

'Wearing vintage liberates one from the dictates of the contemporary fashion machine. Season after season, vintage continues to influence contemporary designers' collections. The trendsetting, vintage-wearing fashionista embraces this ideology and enjoys mixing modern and old into a refreshing individual style. In a world of cookie-cutter copyists, it is vintage that sets one apart and creates the mystery in one's personal style. It is the ultimate in exclusive dressing.'

And yet another Absolutely Fabulous Fair came and went. With lots of beautiful vintage pieces, some very talented young designers, lots of photos, make-up sessions, and fun gift bags it was a wonderful affair! The wonderful young designers are something we'll talk about and see more of in future posts, yet today I thought of approaching the vintage issue. One thing that I always look forward to at an Absolutely Fabulous Fair are the vintage stands as they have quite a good selection. Yet, in spite of some very applaudable efforts, the term 'vintage' continues to be misunderstood and misused. So how better to understand something than to define it properly? According to Funmi Odulate's Shopping for Vintage:

  • Antique - any garments pre- date 1920
  • Vintage - anything after 1920 and up to early 1980s
  • Retro - mainly 60s and 70s casual wear
  • Secondhand - anything post early 80s

And for a more in-depth look . .

Hoping it was useful . .
Wish you a good week ahead!

What a sweet outfit! The dress is very pretty on you. Great guide you've provided here and you make a good point about properly classifying what does and doesn't count as vintage. I find it a bit annoying when someone touts clothes from last year as vintage on Ebay or wherever. I've realised I own some antiques clothing!

Very interesting. I always thought "retro" meant something that was not vintage, but which was supposed to look vintage, or was vintage inspired. I love vintage myself, and this look and the photos are magical. Though it made me laugh a little to see that your very vintage looking dress is in fact from Topshop.

You have such a beautiful blog. I've only been reading for a week or so, but I'm completely smitten!

Great post! Learn to love vintage and embrace clothes you love rather than what current fashion dictates, it's so liberating (and much cheaper). xxx

I missed the Absolutely Fabulous fair this Sunday, sniff, sniff but your post about what's vintage and what's not and how to properly date items sounds like something I've often thought about. I know most vintage/second hand dealers are trying to protect their financial interests (and who can blame them) but do you think it could ever be possible for fair organizers or the Romanian vintage sellers association- if that exists- to issue some leaflets with guidelines in the vein of your diagrams? I doubt people would feel offended if fairs would have both vintage and second hand stalls and some extra info never hurt anyone.

Do you mind if I print 1950s diagram? I's my favorite fashion decade ;)

you look so beautiful! love the outfit!
pe mine ma exsprereaza toate blogurile care au in titlu temenul de vintage si expun numai haine care nici retro nu pot fi numite. E destul de greu sa gasesti piese vintage veritabile

I love the way you presented the fashion decades! Creative as always!

WOow AND I really like this (wrongly paradoxical) "Vintage Freshness" idea, its insolently timeless "Trendy appeal" . . . AND the (so understated) way you illustrate it Here Dear !!!

I absolutely love your outfit! My goodness, it's so so cute! Vintage is seriously the best!

That quote is so true! So much of modern fashion is influenced by vintage, so why not go straight to the source and wear the unique wares of yesteryear. I love vintage precisely for that reason! Great post, those diagrams are so helpful.

Wow, I love the cape and the cute velvet headband :).

You had a great idea with these diagrams. They'd be very useful for a whole lot of people, those who still believe that their outdated 2002 shoes are vintage items.

Can't wait to read your future article(s) about up-and-coming Romanian designers. I regret missing the fair.

Hugs.

What beautiful photographs - great to meet a fellow redhead, too. Veshoevius has already mentioned it, but I find hunting down vintage so frustrating when people sneak in last season's Topshop!

thats great that you've posted the definitions for labelling clothes, so many times I hear people say what they're wearing is vintage and it is so blatantly not! :)

I would include the 1950's vintage garments in the term "retro", though for some reason I never think of the 1970's as retro. To me it's purely 1950's and early 60's. Well, whatever, I say tomato you say tomato right?

Your vintage looks is glorious on you. And I love your quote. I'm so glad wearing vintage clothing is back "in", because I have every intention of embracing it in a big way very soon.

Love,
Heather
